Powerline Adapter FAQs

What is a Powerline Adapter?

A Powerline Adapter allows you to connect to Wi-Fi, even in places your Hub's WiFi won't reach.
When it comes to getting online, your Virgin Media Hub is one souped-up piece of kit. But wireless technology isn't perfect, so there might still be some places in your home that it just can't reach or give you the speeds you crave.

A Virgin Media Powerline Adapter can help you get connected in more places around the house. Whether you want to hook up your games console with a cable or extend the wireless network in your home, our Powerline can help you do it. All you need is a room with a socket. Easy!

Remember the speeds you can achieve with your Powerline will never be as fast as your provisioned broadband speed, and can depend on the quality of the electrical wiring in your home.

How do Powerline adapters work?

Powerline Adapters use your home’s internal electrical wiring to connect your devices.

Powerline adapters come in pairs, but you can add more if you need to. You hook up one of the adapters to you Virgin Media Hub via an ethernet cable and place the second adapter in a room in your home where your existing WiFi doesn’t get to. You can then connect a device straight to your powerline using an Ethernet cable or via your newly created WiFi zone.

Powerline Adapters will only work when they are both plugged into the same electrical circuit, so it may not be possible to connect your home and garden shed, for example. Powerline Adapters may not work well with very old wiring.

My Virgin Media Powerline Adapter isn’t working, what can I do?

Try turning off the power at your sockets, then unplug the adapters, plug them back in and power up again.
Please ensure that your Powerline Adapters are plugged directly into the wall sockets, not extension leads, surge protectors or any other devices.

I’m getting slow speeds when connected to my Virgin Media Powerline Adapter.

Check that your Powerline units are plugged directly into the wall sockets and away from devices that use a lot of energy like tumble dryers and dishwashers.

Chargers for mobile phones and other device chargers can also cause problems. Try using them in a different socket away from the Powerline adapter where possible.

You can run speed tests to see if slowness is caused by old wiring or the distance between your Powerline Adapters.

Remember the speeds you can achieve with your Powerline will never be as fast as your provisioned broadband speed, and can depend on the quality of the electrical wiring in your home.

Losing Wireless Signal

If you’ve added a WiFi Powerline adapter to your home, you’ll have wireless signals coming from at least two places in your home i.e. Your Virgin Media Hub and your Powerline.

You devices may drop connection when you move between the two, so it’s best to stay in once place when you don’t want to be interrupted, when streaming music or video for example.
